about
In March 2012, an earthquake near the Japanese coast triggered a tsunami that had devastating consequences worldwide. Many thousands of people around the world lost their lives as a result of this natural disaster. In the Japanese town of Ōkuma in Fukushima Prefecture, the tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, destroying four reactor units. Several core meltdowns occurred and radioactive material spread uncontrollably. Over 80,000 people within a radius of 20 km had to be evacuated from the region and were already exposed to high levels of radiation at the time. The Japanese government left the inhabitants in the dark as to how high the radiation exposure really was and implemented many promises to support those affected only moderately or not at all. The people affected still feel cheated today and are fighting for compensation in tough court cases. This disaster is the worst since Chernobyl in 1986, when around 18,500 people died as a result of the tsunami. It is unclear how many died as a result of the reactor disaster or will die from the long-term effects.
In this song we process letters from those affected to the Japanese government.
lyrics
Start to count the dead
Quake-area overstuffed
with nuclear power stations
Unsuspecting residents
exposed to radiation
Abandoned newborn – limbs deformed
the worlds demise is a nuclear storm
Hear nothing, say nothing
a Nations Testament.
Stick to obedience
Collapse of government
Abandoned newborn – limbs deformed
the worlds demise is a nuclear storm
for forgiveness you shall pray
leading thousands to the grave
Intentional negligence
you should have seen the threat
the government´s inaction
now start to count the dead
Count the dead
start to count the dead
Intentional negligence
you should have seen the threat
the government´s inaction
now start to count the dead
Count the dead
start to count
The dead you’ll have to answer
You will be the one to blame for arrogance
Your technology cannot control the nature
Send humanity to hell
and take away the chance to crawl up towards heaven
The quake-resistant structure of reactors is a myth,
a fairy-tale you really wanted to believe.
Underestimate the hazardous hidden strength of atomic
power.
Corruption closed the watchdog’s eyes
Intentional negligence
you should have seen the threat
the government´s inaction
now start to count the dead
Count the dead
start to count the dead
Everyone’s lost everything
where the riches were
man-made disaster
predestined to occur
Abandoned newborn – limbs deformed
the worlds demise is a nuclear storm
for forgiveness you shall pray
leading thousands to the grave
Count the dead
start to count the dead
